World Bank
With 189 member countries, staff from more than 170 countries, and offices in over 130 loca ons, the World Bank Group is a
unique partnership. The World Bank groups works in every major area of development. It provides an array of financial products
and technical assistance and helps countries share and apply innova ve knowledge and solu ons to the challenge they face.
World Bank Group consists of five organiza ons (i) The Interna onal Bank for Reconstruc on and Development (IBRD); (ii) The
Interna onal Development Associa on (IDA); (iii) The Interna onal Finance Corpora on; (iv) The Mul lateral Investment
Guarantee Agency; (v) The Interna onal Centre for Se lement of Investment Disputes.
Founded in 1944, The Interna onal Bank for Reconstruc on and Development (IBRD), commonly referred to as the World Bank, is
an interna onal financial ins tu on whose purposes include assis ng the development of its member na on's territories,
promo ng and supplemen ng private foreign investment and promo ng long-range balance growth in interna onal trade.
The organiza on of the bank consists of the Board of Governors, the Board of Execu ve Directors and the Advisory Commi ee, the
Loan Commi ee and the President and other staff members. All the powers of the bank are vested in the Board of Governors
which the supreme policy making body of the bank.The ini al authorized capital of the World Bank was $ 10,000 million, which
was divided in 1 lakh shares of $ 1 lakh each. The authorized capital of the Bank has been increased from me to me with the
approval of member countries.
World Bank engagement in Ganga Rejuvena on Mission
Building on lessons from the past, the Government of India (GoI) has developed a new and more comprehensive vision for Clean-
up and conserva on of the Ganga, led by establishment of the Na onal Ganga River Basin Authority(NGBRA) in 2009 and later
converging into Namami Gange programme-an integrated river Ganga conserva on mission. GoI had requested the World Bank
to provide upstream support to the NGRBA for ins tu onal development, program design and priority infrastructure
investments. Accordingly, World Bank agreed to provide financial support to the tune of US$ 1,000 million (at among exchange
rate `6,900 crore). The financing is a Specific Investment Loan (SIL), blending US$ 180 million of IDA and US$ 820 million of IBRD
resources. Period of Hon'ble the World Bank Loan is scheduled to expire on 31
December 2019. Cumula ve withdrawal made from the loan ll the quarter ended 31
June 2018 was $180.06 million. Namami Gange project is now ranking amongst the
five top programmes of the World Bank during the financial year 2018-19.
